Wings Over America Collection

Wings Over America

The "Wings Over America" series was published mostly in 1943 by the Army Air Forces Training Command. There was a separate volume for most, if not all, training facilities across the country.

The first portion of each volume was nearly identical. It gave a history of the Army Air Forces from early development through World War I. Portraits of then current Air Force generals were shown next. Then a description of the AAF Training Command, either Eastern or Western, was given, including portraits of the general staff. This was followed by descriptions of the college training program, classification centers, pre-flight school, primary flight school, basic flight school, advanced flight school, transition training, aerial gunners, navigators, bombardiers, and glider pilots.

The second portion of each volume was specific to the particular air field or training facility. There was usually a history of the facility, staff photographs, and photographs of local activities. This was usually followed by cadet photographs of those undergoing training at the facility at that time.
